"We must choose. Be a child of the past with all its crudities and imperfections, its failures and defeats, or a child of the future, the future of symmetry and ultimate success."

The Women's Christian Temperance Union
What was it?
The Women's Christian Temperance Union was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in the November of 1874, and was dedicated to creating a sober nation in line with the Bible. Although mostly women, few men joined.
The Women's Christian Temperance Union encouraged previously silent housewives kneel on the floors of alcohol-selling establishments and beg for an end to the sale on liquor. It gave women a new voice in society. Fueled by success, the Women's Christian Temperance Union drove liquor out of 250 communities in 3 short months. In fact, the Women's Christian Temperance Union was the strongest supporter of outlawing alcohol in the United States, and deemed the biggest women's organization of the nineteenth century.

Away With Rum
A song in support of the Prohibition with origins in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. "We're coming, we're coming, our brave little band On the right side of temperance we do take our stand We don't use tobacco because we do think That the people who use it are likely to drink. Away, away with rum, by gum, rum, by gum, rum, by gum Away, away with rum, by gum, the song of the Temperance Union. We never eat cookies because they have yeast And one little bite turns a man to a beast Can you imagine a sadder disgrace Then of a man in the gutter with crumbs on his face. Away, away with rum, by gum, rum, by gum, rum, by gum Away, away with rum, by gum, the song of the Temperance Union. We never eat fruitcake because it has rum And one little bite turns a man to a bum Can you imagine a sorrier sight Than a man eating fruitcake until he gets tight. We're coming, we're coming, our brave little band On the right side of temperance we do take our stand We don't use tobacco because we do think That the people who use it are likely to drink. Away, away with rum, by gum, rum, by gum, rum, by gum Away, away with rum, by gum, the song of the Temperance Union." "Temperance is moderation in the things that are good and total abstinence from the things that are foul." |
